Challenge
Evernote had an extremely popular blog with over 5M DAU, featuring the latest product news, tips, and product integrations. However, the majority of Evernote’s app users—more than five times the blog audience—weren’t seeing this content. We needed a way to surface product news directly within our native apps to reach users where they were. Given Evernote’s global user base, which supports twenty four languages and numerous mobile, desktop, and web platforms, this was no small task. We required a scalable solution that would not only support localization but also deliver relevant news tailored to each user, and designed for the varying UI and feature sets of the platform they were using.
Solution
I led the creation of Evernote Announcements, bringing together a designer, four developers, and three product managers. We designed the Announcements feature for each platform, leveraging native elements and platform-specific UI styles. The development process included building a customized publishing system that allowed content creators to selectively publish relevant news to each of Evernote's native clients, customized by language, platform, and account type.
Results
The introduction of in-app product news through Evernote Announcements was a significant success. In its first year, users averaged 3 announcement views per month, which led to a 7% increase in new app and hardware integrations and a 3% rise in premium upgrade revenue.
